Carpet has become loose

Cause

Carpet has stretched since it was first laid, or was not sufficiently stretched when laid

Repair

  • loose carpet can be a tripping hazard and should be repaired without delay, especially when there may be older people who are more vulnerable to falls living in the home or visiting the home
  • another reason to fix it is that over the long term, loose carpet can delaminate, where the backing materials separate as a result of constant movement, shortening the lifespan of the carpet
  • if the carpet was laid in recent years and was not sufficiently stretched at the time, call back the company or individual that did the installation. Implied warranties in building law require that work be done with reasonable care and skill
  • if the carpet has been in place for many years, engage an experienced carpet layer to tighten it and refix around edges. Choose a well established company with a good track record. Some companies offer a guarantee for restretching work
  • avoid dragging heavy objects across the carpet and avoid overwetting, for example with excessive steam cleaning

Cause

Carpet has come off edge gripper bars
