Roof glazing – aluminium frames pitting
Cause
Build-up of air-borne salt, dust or dirt
Repair
- aluminium joinery should be cleaned on a regular basis. Manufacturers often recommend cleaning once every 3–6 months but more frequently closer to the coastline. Use warm water and a mild household detergent and rinse well. Dry the glass to avoid marks. Avoid acid or alkali or solvent-based cleaners. Do not use steel scrapers or steel wool
- if the visual appearance is unacceptable, recoating the frames may be an option. Ask for recommendations from the joinery manufacturer/supplier. In some cases, washing down with a proprietary cleaner, lightly sanding with a very fine sandpaper and then using a good quality paint system – a primer and 2 topcoats designed for the purpose – may be an option
- there are also specialist companies that restore the surface of aluminium joinery. Pitted or discoloured aluminium frames may be able to be treated and refinished with a coating that restores the appearance
- always tell someone when you plan to work at height. Follow this guidance around using ladders and scaffolding safely
