Textured ceiling falling off

Cause

Texture losing adhesion to substrate; at end of serviceable life

Repair

  • the crumbly nature of textured ceilings makes repair difficult and removal is usually required

  • it is essential to test a sample of the ceiling to see if it contains asbestos before any work is carried out on it. A minimum of one teaspoonful is required, and this should include any sparkly material. For more details on testing for asbestos, see the Asbestos maintenance guide

  • do not try to remove materials that contain asbestos yourself. Asbestos is a dangerous material that can cause fatal illnesses when breathed in. Working with asbestos is strictly regulated in New Zealand. The WorkSafe website has more information for homeowners.
