Timber and steel windows – rusted hinges
Listed under: Exterior, windows, durability, corrosion, rust, fixings and hardware, fixings
Cause
Dust, dirt, air-borne salts, atmospheric moisture
Repair
- remove the sash. If the corrosion is not severe, polishing with a metal polishing compound and finishing with a light oil may restore the appearance of brass hinges
- if the corrosion is severe, the appearance is unacceptable or the hinges no longer move freely, replace with new brass or stainless steel hinges
- reinstall the sash. If screw holes are enlarged and the original screws are no longer effective, replace with longer screws of the same gauge. Alternatively, drill out the existing holes and glue in timber dowels before reinstalling the hinges. Another option is to install the hinges at a new location on the window and fill in the old holes
- start a regular cleaning/maintenance programme
Cause
Lack of cleaning or lubrication
Repair
- as above
Cause
Incorrectly selected metal for the exposure level
Repair
- replace the hinges with stainless steel. 316 stainless steel hinges give better protection in aggressive environments – such as close to a surf beach – than 304 stainless steel or galvanised steel
