Timber deck posts – rot at base

Cause

The timber treatment was not adequate for the location

Repair

  • temporarily support the structure then cut the rotten section off the base of the post; bolt-fix the shortened post to a stainless steel post bracket set into a concrete footing
  • replace the rotten post with an H5-treated timber post fixed to a stainless steel post bracket set into a concrete footing

Cause

An H4 timber post was encased in concrete or in ground contact at the base

Repair

  • temporarily support the structure then cut the rotten section off the base of the post; bolt-fix the shortened post to a stainless steel post bracket set into a concrete footing
  • replace the rotten post with an H5-treated timber post fixed to a stainless steel post bracket set into a concrete footing

Cause

Moisture was trapped at the base of the posts

  • replace the rotten post with an H5-treated timber post fixed to a stainless steel post bracket set into a concrete footing

Cause

The timber is at the end of its serviceable life
