Timber shingles/shakes – variable roof colour

Cause

Some areas of the roof have greater exposure to weathering than other areas

Repair

  • timber shingles and shakes will naturally weather to a silvery-gray unless specifically coated and maintained to retain colour

  • differences in colour may occur across a roof due to its differing exposures. The presence of debris and growth of mould or mildew may also affect the colouring

  • remove tree branches overhanging a shingle/shake roof. Tree shade can slow down drying between periods of rain and debris from trees can accumulate on the roof surface

  • remove moss and debris from the roof surface and the spaces between shingles and shakes by sweeping with a stiff non-metallic bristle broom or brush. Dirt can also be removed with low-pressure washing, with the water stream directed down the roof

  • never use high-pressure water blasting or wire-bristled brushes or brooms. High pressure water blasting can damage the timber surface and drive moisture into the roof space. Steel bristles that fall out of wire brushes can react with chemicals in western red cedar and stain the wood

  • proprietary coatings are available to restore colour on a shingle/shake roof, but these require regular reapplication to retain the appearance
