Repair

  • where damage is not serious and is only to spouting or cladding, heavily cutting the growth back so it is clear of the building may be a short-term solution

  • where a long-term solution is required, remove the tree and all its roots as far as possible and replace with plants better suited to the location

  • for very large or tall trees, trees on steep ground or with branches close to power lines, consider using a professional arborist. Look for an appropriately trained/experienced practitioner, such as an approved contractor of the New Zealand Arboricultural Association

  • if you plan to carry out the work yourself, always let someone else know when you are working at height. Make sure pets and children are well clear of the work area

  • make sure you have a strong and stable platform to work from and a sharp saw

  • with large or heavy branches or trunk, remove in stages

  • remove the roots as far as possible to prevent the tree growing back
