Veranda beams and posts – distortion of timber

Cause

Weather exposure

Repair

  • replace severely distorted members. Veranda posts and beams must be treated to at least H3.2 and have the base supported clear of the ground (or for posts, use H5 treated timber)

  • replacement of these members must comply with the Building Code. Clauses B1 Structure and B2 Durability cite NZS 3604:2011 Timber-framed buildings. Some key content in the standard for verandas includes Table 9.2 (post-beam connections) and Table 10.8 (veranda beam sizes and fixings)

  • the work does not need a building consent if the veranda:

    • is on or attached to an existing building

    • is on the ground or first floor level

    • does not exceed 20 m²

    • does not overhang any area accessible by the public

    • is not going to be closed in.
