Asphalt shingles – cupping and/or curling shingles

Cause

Tabs were not secure because the sealing strip did not line up with the adjacent shingle when they were installed 

Repair

  • add extra bituminous adhesive as recommended by the manufacturer under each tab and press firmly in place
  • if a large number of shingles are affected, the roof should be replaced. If the old asphalt shingle roof has met minimum Building Code durability provisions (it has lasted at least 15 years) a building consent is not required; if not, a consent must be obtained before reroofing.

Cause

Incorrectly nailed shingles, for example where nails were fixed through the sealing strip, thereby limiting the effectiveness of the seal

Repair

  • add extra bituminous adhesive as recommended by the manufacturer under each tab and press firmly in place
  • if a large number of shingles are affected, the roof should be replaced. If the old asphalt shingle roof has met minimum Building Code durability provisions (it has lasted at least 15 years) a building consent is not required; if not, a consent must be obtained before reroofing.

Cause

There has been moisture on the underside of the shingles due to high roof space moisture levels and inadequate roof space ventilation

Repair

  • add extra bituminous adhesive as recommended by the manufacturer under each tab and press firmly in place
  • improve roof space ventilation by installing additional or new vents to eaves, ridge and/or gable end wall
  • if a large number of shingles are affected, the roof should be replaced. If the old asphalt shingle roof has met minimum Building Code durability provisions (it has lasted at least 15 years) a building consent is not required; if not, a consent must be obtained before reroofing.

The shingles are at end of their serviceable life
