Cause

This is old wiring that may be in poor condition

Repair

  • although unlikely, it is possible that a few houses may still have a type of wiring older than the white thermoplastic sheathed (TPS) wiring installed since the 1960s. If this is the case, all the old wiring should be replaced
  • rewiring a house cannot can be done by DIYers
  • rewiring must be carried out by a licensed electrical worker who must also hold an annual practising certificate
  • you can check that an electrician is registered here
  • the electrical worker should give you a Certificate of Compliance after the work has been completed. This indicates that the work is safe, complies with safety standards and codes and has been tested. Keep the certificate with other house paperwork such as the house insurance policy etc.
