Ceiling mould/mildew growth
Listed under: Interior, insulation, gas, heating, mechanical ventilation, health and safety, ceilings, moisture, condensation, mould, mould health and safety
Cause
Condensation forms on the ceiling because the roof space is not insulated - mould growth is the result of regular condensation occurring
Repair
- to remove mould/mildew, wash ceiling; treat with fungicide before repainting
- insulate ceiling space
- increase the ventilation. Add a rangehood over the kitchen stove and an exhaust vent near the shower in the bathroom, both vented to remove steam to outside the house. Installing a shower dome above the shower is another option. Opening windows for at least 10 minutes every day can reduce moisture in a house
- avoid using unflued gas heaters, avoid drying clothes inside and make sure a clothes dryer is vented to expel moist air outside
Cause
Not enough fresh air ventilation to the space
