Concrete patios – surface deterioration

Cause

Shrinkage cracking

Repair

  • To determine the condition of concrete, tap the surface with a hammer - a hollow sound will indicate deterioration such as delamination of the concrete, while a ringing noise will indicate that the concrete is sound.
  • it is essential that the selected repair material (modified polymer concrete) has a very low shrinkage rate. The existing concrete has already gone through shrinkage, so if the repair material shrinks significantly, it will debond and the repair will fail.
  • if the concrete is sound, it may be able to be re-surfaced: waterblast to clean the surface and remove all loose or unsound concrete by grinding or scrabbling. Apply a proprietary modified polymer concrete coating to the concrete surface in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and trowel finish. Alternatively, lay tiles or pavers over the cleaned concrete surface
  • if the concrete is in poor condition, break it up and remove; lay new concrete
  • for regular cleaning, use low pressure chemical washes rather than waterblasting

Corroded reinforcing

Cause

Crumbling surface as a result of poor quality concrete finishing at installation
