Fading of uPVC door and window frames

Cause

Weathering, UV light exposure

Repair

  • the colour in uPVC door and window frames is typically achieved by a PVDF acrylic foil being laminated onto the surface of the profile during manufacturing. While this colour finish is expected to last longer than 15 years, there may be some loss of colour and gloss over time

  • despite minor appearance changes, with regular maintenance, repainting should generally not be required during the lifetime of the frames. If the surface appearance is no longer considered acceptable, ask the advice of the product supplier before painting. A specialised paint system is required – the paints widely available for timber door and window frames are not suitable for uPVC

  • clean frames regularly to prevent dirt build up using warm water with mild detergent and a soft non-abrasive cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or strong organic solvents such as acetone-based cleaners – these can damage the surface of the uPVC
