Fences and gates – lattice/slats disintegrating

Cause

Poor fixing or corroded staples

Repair

  • if the lattice is in good condition but is insecure because there are too few fixings to the framing, beading or posts, or the fixings have become loose or fallen out, add new fixings. Use hot-dip galvanized nails or stainless steel with annular grooved shank in very corrosive environments (close to the sea or in a geothermal area)

  • where the fixings holding the lattice itself together are failing, it may be easier to replace the lattice with new

  • where it is possible to refix the lattice together, use stainless steel staples/fixings

Cause

Corroded staples

Repair

  • where the staples holding the lattice itself together are failing, it may be easier to replace the lattice with new

  • where it is possible to refix the lattice together, use stainless steel staples/fixings

Cause

Insufficient support

Repair

  • where there is insufficient support to the lattice itself from framing or beading timbers, add or replace the framing/beading. Purpose-made H 3.2 radiata pine framing/beading is readily available

  • fix framing/beading to posts with hot-dip galvanized nails or stainless steel with an annular grooved shank in very corrosive environments (close to the sea or in a geothermal area)

  • fence posts should be no more than 2.4 metres apart (or 1.8 metres for strong fences). If posts are further apart than this, add intermediate posts or replace existing posts with posts that are closer

Cause

Lattice at the end of its serviceable life

Repair

  • replace the lattice. Pre-made framed panels of H3.2 radiata pine diagonal timber lattice are readily available in dimensions such as 1800 x 600 mm or 2400 x 600 mm

  • you can also make a framed trellis to your own dimensions with expanding trellis and H 3.2 radiata pine capping/framing or beading timbers

  • fix to posts with hot-dip galvanized nails or stainless steel with an annular grooved shank in very corrosive environments (close to the sea or in a geothermal area)
