Profiled metal roofing dented or damaged

Cause

Sheets were damaged during installation

Repair

  • if the roofing was installed in recent years, call the original installer back to make repairs
  • if the installer is no longer available, ask the roofing supplier or manufacturer (if known) for advice
  • if the roofing is accessible from the underside, it may be possible in some cases to push dents out
  • if the damage is severe and/or may impact the weathertightness or durability of the roof, or if the dents are on a low-slope roof and may allow water to pond on the roof, the affected sheets should be replaced
  • profiled metal roofing with a base metal thickness of 0.55 mm is available and generally has better resistance to dents that 0.40 mm metal
  • while sunscreen gives important protection while working on a roof, do not use sunscreen containing titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These substances can cause irreparable damage to some factory finished roofing surfaces
  • always tell someone else when you plan to work on a roof and take the appropriate safety precautions. You can find details here

Cause

Impact from overhanging branches

Repair

  • remove the overhanging branches
  • for roof repair, follow the advice in the first repair above

Cause

Walking on unsupported parts of the roof

Repair

  • try to avoid foot traffic on the roof in future. Work out why there has been foot traffic in the past. If people have walked on the roof to trim trees, for example, the tree branches could be cut back so roof access is no longer required
  • if foot traffic on the roof is unavoidable, limit access to supported parts of the roof (where there is framing under the profiled metal) where damage is less likely to occur and wear footwear with soft soles
  • for roof repair, follow the advice in the first repair above
