Cause

Glass was cleaned with an abrasive cleaner

Repair

  • for minor scratches in areas that are not very visible, you could try polishing with cerium oxide. It comes in powder form and is mixed with water to create a paste

  • the most effective repair is likely to come from a well-experienced company that specialises in removing scratches or etching from glass. The scratch is typically polished out with a hand-held device using mild abrasives. It works on normal window glass as well as toughened and tinted glass. With very deep scratches there may be some subsequent visual distortion in the glass

  • in extreme cases, replacement of the glass may be the only option that will give a satisfactory result

Incorrect use of a metal scraper to remove paint

  • glass manufacturers do not generally recommend using metal scrapers to remove paint or other material from glass surfaces

Cause

Plaster or concrete has splashed onto the glass 

Repair

  • cement-based products such as concrete, fibre-cement, mortar and plaster contain a high concentration of lime, which forms an alkaline solution when mixed with water. Run-off from these building materials over glass can cause surface corrosion and etching
