Stainless steel benchtops – dented, scratched

Cause

Using benchtop as cutting surface

Repair

  • contact the bench supplier/installer for their advice. They will often recommend polishing with a non-abrasive cleaning liquid or powder mixed with water to form a paste
  • for more serious scratches, some suppliers suggest using a more abrasive cleaner such as toothpaste
  • avoid using wire wool pads, scouring powders with a coarse grit or cleaners that contain chlorine
  • a little olive oil applied to a dried bench surface may make damage less visible
  • you could consult a specialist stainless steel restoration/refurbishment company that uses chemical and machining approaches to restore the benchtop. Look for an established company
  • once the repair has been made, avoid cutting on the bench in future. Do not place extremely hot pots directly from the oven on to the bench surface – that can result in the steel surface separating from the wood substrate supporting it, leaving a bench surface that is no longer flat and level
  • if you have hard water in your area, after cleaning the benchtop, dry it off to avoid
  • eventual discolouration of the steel surface
