Timber door finish has deteriorated

Cause

The door finish was not suitable for an exposed location – many external doors are only suitable for use in sheltered locations

Repair

  • scrape and/or sand the finish back to bare timber; prime; paint with at least 2 coats of semi-gloss or high gloss water-based enamel paint. Caution: old layers of paint may contain lead. Lead can be a health hazard if fumes, dust or paint fragments are swallowed or breathed in. For more information see Health and safety: lead-based paint
  • provide protection such as a veranda or canopy
  • if required, replace the door with a new door suitable for the level of exposure
