Timber slat decks – moss/mould/lichen growing on decking
Repair
- wash decking with water and a stiff bristle brush – use a mild detergent or a solution of 1 part household bleach to 4 parts water if necessary to remove moss, then rinse off thoroughly
- clean with fungicidal wash to sterilise the surface, particularly before painting
Cause
The deck or balcony is continuously damp because of heavy planting, overhanging trees or a nearby steep bank

- cut back plants or overhanging trees
Cause
The deck is continuously wet from an overflowing gutter or pipe
Repair
- wash decking with water and a stiff bristle brush – use a mild detergent or a solution of 1 part household bleach to 4 parts water if necessary to remove moss, then rinse off thoroughly
- clean with fungicidal wash to sterilise the surface, particularly before painting
- fix the overflowing gutter or pipe, or re-direct the water away from the deck
