Cause

Timber posts rotting in the ground

Repair

  • replace timber posts with H5-treated posts

Cause

Posts not anchored sufficiently deeply into the ground

Repair

  • dig up posts; increase depth of hole; re-install posts - hole depth should be minimum 100 mm deep for each 200 mm of post above ground

Cause

Weight of a heavy wall is too much for the foundations or the ground – brick/stone/concrete block wall

Repair

  • demolish part of wall to reduce the weight on foundations/ground
  • re-build wall with adequate foundations
  • replace fence if necessary

Cause

Ground settlement or lateral movement 

Repair

  • re-compact ground around posts; add cement to soil to stop shrinkage when compacting
  • re-align posts; re-compact earth as described above
  • replace fence if necessary
  • for lateral ground movement, ask a chartered professional (geotechnical) engineer on how to remedy

Cause

Fence was pushed over by a vehicle

Repair

  • re-align posts; re-compact ground around posts; add cement to soil to stop shrinkage when compacting; repair damaged area
  • replace fence if necessary

Cause

Tree roots are moving the fence foundations

Repair

  • remove tree roots, repair wall
