Log construction – caulk failure in log joints

Cause

UV deterioration, or caulk at end of its serviceable life

Repair

  • many of the log buildings in New Zealand are the products of specialist companies that have developed their own proprietary log construction systems, including for sealing the logs. Ask for advice from the company that built your building if possible
  • the companies typically have their own preferred products for preventing water ingress into log joins. This may be a polyurethane caulk or an EPDM gasket or some other product
  • any product used in repairing log construction should be made for the purpose. Do not use general purpose fillers or sealants
  • the repair work should ideally be carried out by a specialist log construction company rather than on a DIY basis
